Also known as Village of Bald Head Island

Lighthouse Wynd

The Village of Bald Head Island's government offices on Lighthouse Wynd, and the source of the island rules every visitor should know, from golf carts and beach gear to turtle-season lights.

Village of Bald Head Island Village Hall with bunting and picket fence

Village Hall, on Lighthouse Wynd a short walk from Old Baldy, is the seat of the Village of Bald Head Island, which governs the island with a mayor, a four-member council, and about 50 employees. Most visitors never need to step inside; the offices handle administration, finance, and water and sewer billing, and Village staff offer free notary service.

What visitors do need are the Village’s rules, and they’re worth reading before you arrive. The short version: licensed drivers only on golf carts, 18 mph, all four tires off the pavement when you park at a beach access, clear your beach gear every night, stay off the dunes, keep lights off the beach during turtle season, and dial 911 for police, fire, or EMS.

What you'll find

  • Village administration, finance, and water and sewer billing
  • Free notary service
  • Online golf cart registration for owners
  • The island's visitor rules for golf carts, beaches, dogs, and sea turtles
  • CodeRED emergency alerts

Good to know

  • For police, fire, or EMS, and for any call for service, dial 911. Bald Head Island Public Safety, a combined police, fire, and EMS department, works from Edward Teach Extension.
  • Golf carts: licensed drivers only, 18 mph unless posted lower, no open containers, and all four tires off the pavement when you park at a beach access.
  • Beach gear, tents included, has to come off the beach every night from 9pm to 8am, all year.
  • Stay off the dunes, and don't walk on the jetty or the terminal groin.
  • From May 1 through October 31, keep artificial light off the beach after dark; red lights only.
  • Dogs must be restrained at all times. On the beach from sunset to sunrise, May 1 to November 15, the leash can be no longer than 10 feet.
  • Fireworks, sparklers included, are prohibited, and the island's beaches have no lifeguards.
