Village Chapel

Also known as Village Chapel of Bald Head Island

Lighthouse Wynd

The island's interdenominational chapel on Lighthouse Wynd beside Old Baldy, dedicated in 1987: Sunday services at 8:30 and 10am, a chapel open for prayer, and weddings.

The Village Chapel stands on Lighthouse Wynd beside Old Baldy. Islanders first worshiped together on Easter Sunday 1984, in the lounge of the old Bald Head Island Inn. After an Easter sunrise service at the lighthouse in 1985, the Mitchell family donated the land, and the chapel was dedicated on Easter Sunday 1987, before it was even finished. Texas architect Clovis Heimsath took his cue from the old life-saving stations, and the windows behind the altar look out over the marsh toward Bald Head Creek and Middle Island.

The chapel is interdenominational. Local volunteers lead the services, and visiting ministers from many denominations, recommended by island property owners, preach through the year. Sunday brings a traditional service at 8:30am and a contemporary one at 10am, with courtyard seating outside, and the doors stay open for prayer the rest of the week. It also hosts baptisms, vow renewals, memorials, and weddings.
