Maritime Market
The island's only full grocery store: fresh local seafood, a deli with fresh pasta and house-made salads, wine and craft beer, family meals to go, and two kitchens under one roof.
Maritime Market is the island’s grocery store and the place to stock the rental. Bald Head Island Limited built it in 2001 as the anchor of the shops on Maritime Way, and Melissa and Claude Pope have owned it since 2011. It is a full-line store: produce and staples, natural and organic foods, a deli counter, and a wine and craft beer selection deep enough for a week at the beach.
The house-made things are the ones to know about. The deli makes fresh pasta every day, and the case holds market-made salads and dips sold by the pound, Claude’s Famous Pimento Cheese among them. The seafood counter brings in local fish and shellfish, and family meals and catering pans take care of a first-night dinner. Under the same roof, Sweet Bay Cafe serves breakfast and lunch and Copper’s fires pizzas in the evening, and in summer the Forest Pavilion next door has a walk-up ice cream window.

Good to know
- Fresh seafood orders placed by noon are ready for pickup at 5pm the same day. No advance orders and no Sunday pickups.
- Family meals and catering need at least 24 hours' notice.
- Pre-arrival grocery delivery is a separate company, BHI Delivery, which shops the market for you. It is closed for the 2026 season.
- There are no custom cakes; sheet cakes and cheesecakes are first come, first served.
- In the cooler months the market hosts Howl at the Moon on full-moon evenings at Beach Access 39: a bonfire, a bagpiper, and soup. Dates are on its events page.
